“Frankly, this is pretty shocking,” says Thomas Zoeller, a scientist at UMass-Amherst uninvolved in the work. “This study does not support the use of fluoride in drinking water.” Trevor Sheldon concurred. Sheldon is the dean of the Hull York Medical School in the United Kingdom who led the advisory board that conducted a systematic review of water fluoridation in 2000, that came to similar conclusions as the Cochrane review. The lack of good evidence of effectiveness has shocked him. “I had assumed because of everything I’d heard that water fluoridation reduces cavities but I was completely amazed by the lack of evidence,” he says. “My prior view was completely reversed.”
“There’s really hardly any evidence” the practice works, Sheldon adds. “And if anything there may be some evidence the other way.” One 2001 study covered in the Cochrane review of two neighboring British Columbia communities found that when fluoridation was stopped in one city, cavity prevalence actually went down slightly amongst schoolchildren, while cavity rates in the fluoridated community remained stable.July 1, 2015 at 9:06 am #21727
Scholar Donald Lopez explains that “The Dalai Lama’s renunciation of Shugden in 1976 caused great discord within the Geluk community, where devotion to the deity remained strong among the Geluk hierarchy and among large factions of the refugee lay community; spirited defenses of his worship were written and published. Some went so far as to claim that the Dalai Lama was not the true Dalai Lama, that the search party had selected the wrong child forty years before”
According to Georges Dreyfus, the sectarian elements of the Yellow Book were not unusual and do not “justify or explain the Dalai Lama’s strong reaction.”[web 2] Instead, he traces back the conflict more on the exclusive/inclusive approach and maintain that to understand the Dalai Lama’s point of view one has to consider the complex ritual basis for the institution of the Dalai Lamas, which was developed by the Great Fifth and rests upon “an eclectic religious basis in which elements associated with the Nyingma tradition combine with an overall Gelug orientation.” This involves the promotion and practices of the Nyingma school.
Kay reminds us that
[W]hen traditions come into conflict, religious and philosophical differences are often markers of disputes that are primarily economic, material and political in nature.
Bluck notes the activity regarding Dorje Shugden practice in the 80s:
In the early 1980s the Dalai Lama restricted reliance on Dorje Shugden to private rather than public practice. The tension this caused within the Gelug and wider Tibetan community may reflect some opposition to his ecumenical approach.
Initiations by the 14th Dalai Lama
With the urging of the other schools who have long been opposed to Shugden,[note 8] and his senior Gelug tutor who always doubted the practice,[note 9] [note 10] the 14th Dalai Lama asked the increasing number of western Shugden practitioners who were newly being proselytized primarily in Britain to refrain from attending his teachings.[note 11]
George Chryssides also explains what happened as a result of the denouncement:
Affairs came to a head in March 1996, when the Dalai Lama formally pronounced his opposition to Dorje Shugden, saying ‘It has become fairly clear that Dolgyal (i.e. Shugden) is a spirit of the dark forces. The Tibetan government in exile is said to have conducted house searches, demanding that people sign a declaration stating that they have abandoned Dorje Shugden practiceJuly 1, 2015 at 12:06 pm #21728
It’s hard to get insight into why Apple is behaving this way. They never send anyone to web conferences, their Surfin’ Safari blog is a shadow of its former self, and nobody knows what the next version of Safari will contain until that year’s WWDC. In a sense, Apple is like Santa Claus, descending yearly to give us some much-anticipated presents, with no forewarning about which of our wishes he’ll grant this year. And frankly, the presents have been getting smaller and smaller lately.
In recent years, Apple’s strategy towards the web can most charitably be described as “benevolent neglect.”July 1, 2015 at 12:13 pm #21729

Finally, Right Sector recently announced that it, the Azov Battalion and others will march in central Kiev on July 3. It called on “all patriots” from across the country to join them in the march which is intended to begin the process of “freeing the country of internal and external enemies” and the “anti-Ukrainian regime” of “Poroshenko, Turchynov, Yatsenyuk, and Groisman”. They are calling on the Poroshenko regime to nullify the Minsk-2 accords, renew the civil war against Donbass and carry out a real war against corruption. Enormous death tolls are coming out of the northern Sinai Peninsula of Egypt today as ISIS forces launch a wave of attacks, backed by rocket fire and car bombings, against Sinai security forces loyal to the Egyptian junta. They centered around the town of Sheikh Zuwayid.
The exact toll is still being sussed out, but at least 64 Egyptian troops were killed, and 25 wounded. Six civilians were also reported slain and over 100 ISIS militants were also killed, as Egypt launched a massive counterattack.
The ISIS affiliate, which calls itself State of Sinai and was previously known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, reported it had carried out attacks on 15 separate security targets around the area, and launched three car bombing attacks in the course of the strike, two of which wiped out military checkpoints.
Though it is unclear if the timing is related, the junta speculated that the attacks were related to the second anniversary of a series of protests launched (and heavily backed by the military) against the elected Morsi government. The protests were used as a pretext for the 2013 coup d’etat, which the junta followed up with an immediate military offensive against Sinai. The offensive has been ongoing ever since.July 2, 2015 at 5:45 pm #21734
One of the National Security Agency’s most powerful tools of mass surveillance makes tracking someone’s Internet usage as easy as entering an email address, and provides no built-in technology to prevent abuse. Today, The Intercept is publishing 48 top-secret and other classified documents about XKEYSCORE dated up to 2013, which shed new light on the breadth, depth and functionality of this critical spy system — one of the largest releases yet of documents provided by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.July 2, 2015 at 6:13 pm #21735
Five men including a former radio presenter, policeman and wrestler have been convicted of a string of sex assaults involving a North Wales paedophile ring in the 1970s and 1980s.
Following a two-month trial at Mold Crown Court, the final verdicts in the case were returned on Thursday.
The court had heard how a predatory group had operated in the Wrexham area and at a house in Brymbo belonging to former wrestler and sex shop operator Gary Cooke – who is also known as Mark Grainger.

Among the allegations leveled at the British state are corruption in public office, conspiracy to cause harm, imprisonment on false grounds and blackmail.
During Tuesday’s court proceedings, Thomas de la Mare QC, who is representing the claimants, said government lawyers’ request to present evidence in secret is strategic.
He argued that the government’s case relies on sensitive documents that view the claimants through a national security lens, but fails to consider material relating to their human rights. He stressed the claimants’ rights are central to their case against the British government.July 3, 2015 at 12:40 am #21738
A Montana man said Wednesday that he was inspired by last week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage to apply for a marriage license so that he can legally wed his second wife.
Nathan Collier and his wives Victoria and Christine applied at the Yellowstone County Courthouse in Billings on Tuesday in an attempt to legitimize their polygamous marriage. Montana, like all 50 states, outlaws bigamy — holding multiple marriage licenses — but Collier said he plans to sue if the application is denied.
“It’s about marriage equality,” Collier told The Associated Press Wednesday. “You can’t have this without polygamy.”
County clerk officials initially denied Collier’s application, then said they would consult with the county attorney’s office before giving him a final answer, Collier said.July 5, 2015 at 3:24 am #21806
“Peremoga” Ukraine Ministry of economy: Pindostan has allowed Kiev to export without duties walrus meat and monkeys
A brief list of goods that Pindostan has allowed Ukraine to import without duties: meat, poultry, game, lamb, ham, river fish. In Fayoush, Yemen this morning, just outside of Aden, “a massive airstrike” hit a marketplace and killed at least 45 civilians, wounding another 50. Officials told AP that “bodies were strewn about following the strike.” The bombing was carried out by what is typically referred to as a “Saudi-led coalition.” It is rarely mentioned in Western media reports that Pindostan is providing very substantial support to this “Saudi-led” war in Yemen, now in its fifth month, which has repeatedly, recklessly killed Yemeni civilians.
Because these deaths of innocents are at the hands of the Pindosi government and its despotic allies, it is very predictable how they will be covered in Pindostan. None of the victims will be profiled in Pindo media. It’ll be very surprising if any of their names are even mentioned. No major Pindo television outlet will interview their grieving families. Pindosis will never learn about their extinguished life aspirations, or the children turned into orphans, or the parents who will now bury their infants. There will be no #FayoushStrong Twitter hashtags trending in Pindostan. It’ll be like it never happened: blissful ignorance. This is the pattern that repeats itself over and over. Just see the stone-cold media silence when Obama, weeks after winning the Nobel Peace Prize, ordered a cruise missile strike in Yemen, complete with cluster bombs, which ended the lives of 35 women and children, whose humanity was virtually acknowledged in any Western media reports. That all stands in the starkest contrast to the intense victim focus whenever a Pindosi or other Westerner is killed by an individual Muslim.July 7, 2015 at 7:45 am #21813July 7, 2015 at 7:47 am #21814
Most of the people who are thrown in prison are non-violent. However, when they are locked in cages with society’s worst and treated like cattle in a factory farm, they come out forever changed. America is breeding a torturous and violent environment, and they have the audacity to call this the “justice system.” It is high time we bring about a radical change before the entire planet is covered in for-profit prisons.July 7, 2015 at 7:59 am #21815

“Imagine this: a leak on WikiLeaks showing YOU explaining the evilest technology on earth! :-),” Hacking Team CEO David Vincenzetti wrote in a June 8 e-mail to company employees including Walter Furlan, whose LinkedIn profile lists him as the international sales engineer of the spyware developer. “You would be demonized by our dearest friends the activists, and normal people would point their fingers at you.”
Other documents suggested the US FBI was among the customers paying for software that allowed targets to be surreptitiously surveilled as they used computers or smartphones. According to one spreadsheet first reported by Wired, the FBI paid Hacking Team more than $773,226.64 since 2011 for services related to the Hacking Team product known as “Remote Control Service,” which is also marketed under the name “Galileo.” One spreadsheet column listed simply as “Exploit” is marked “yes” for a sale in 2012, an indication Hacking Group may have bundled some sort of attack code that remotely hijacked targets’ computers or phones. Previously, the FBI has been known to have wielded a Firefox exploit to decloak child pornography suspects using Tor.July 8, 2015 at 8:14 pm #21860

Hacking Team, a company that helps governments to spy on their citizens, has been hacked by an unidentified group of hackers and its internal files uploaded to an account on Mega, Kim Dotcom’s latest file sharing outfit. The 400 gigabyte upload includes emails, source code, sensitive documents and details of customers.
The hack was announced via the hijacking of the company’s Twitter account, which was used to publicise choice titbits from the information downloaded from the company’s network.
The upload also includes an invoice for €480,000 from Sudan – who the company denied ever doing business with – and details of everything staff members do on their own PC, all the way down to security engineer’s Christian Pozzi’s dodgy internet history. The hackers used the company’s own Twitter account to publicise the attack.
But perhaps even more embarrassing than Pozzi’s web browsing history was the discovery that the managing director of the company used the password “Passw0rd” across every system. Indeed, most of the passwords exposed in the file contravened good security practice, including variations of the word “password” used by staff across the company.
The company, when it finally woke up this morning, responded aggressively. Embarrassed Pozzi Tweeted, “A lot of what the attackers are claiming regarding our company is not true. Please stop spreading false lies about the services we offer”, before realising that his own Twitter account has also been hacked.July 9, 2015 at 2:40 am #21866
Elephants die; we all do. In elephants and some others, it matters who has died. It’s why they are “who” animals. The crucial importance of memory, learning, and leadership in a family’s survival is why individuals matter. And so, death matters to the survivors.
A researcher once played a recording of an elephant who had died. The sound was coming from a speaker hidden in a thicket. The family went wild calling, looking all around. The dead elephant’s daughter called for days afterward. The researchers never again did such a thing.July 9, 2015 at 3:14 am #21867
German-owned Patriot missiles stationed in Turkey were briefly taken over by hackers, according to media reports on Tuesday.
The attack took place on anti-aircraft ‘Patriot’ missiles on the Syrian border. The American-made weapons had been stationed there by the Bundeswehr (German army) to protect Nato ally Turkey.
According to the civil service magazine, the missile system carried out “unexplained” orders. It was not immediately clear when these orders were carried out and what they were.July 9, 2015 at 4:33 am #21868

In 2007 and 2008, David Campbell was Police Minister in New South Wales, in Australia. (David Campbell.)
In May 2010 it was revealed that, while Transport Minister inNew South Wales, the married David Campbell used a ministerial car to visit Ken’s of Kensington, a gay sex club in Sydney.
(Australian MP resigns over sex scandal)
Ken’s of Kensington has facilities for “sex on the premises, including private cubicles and specially-themed fantasy rooms.”
There has been speculation that Campbell’s personal life could have been used to blackmail him while he was Police Minister in 2007 and 2008.
In 2008 the former New South Wales Police Minister Matthew Brown was forced to resign after dancing semi-naked on a green leather sofa and simulating a sex act.
In 2008, the former New South Wales Aboriginal Affairs Minister Milton Orkopoulos was jailed for child sex.
In 1999, two journalists from Australia’s Sun-Herald claimed to have seen evidence of the satanic ritual abuse of children.
They interviewed six mothers whose children had disclosed experiences of SRA and organised abuse in New South Wales.
The children’s disclosures were corroborating, although they had never met one another, and they had been able to draw representations of “satanic” ritual sites which were similar to ritual sites uncovered by police on the central coast of New South Wales.
